ICF Case
Study

Project:
East Grand Middle School
Square Footage: 87,000 sq. ft.
Completed: Dec. 1999
Interesting facts about this project:
- When faced with the challenge of constructing a durable, wind
resistant, well-insulated
school in the winter weather of the Colorado mountains located
at 7900 feet (just over the Continental Divide from Denver),
the County School Board selected Insulating Concrete Forms.
- Officials in the school district were in favor of the ICF
building system from the beginning, according to Ben Zastrow,
school district construction manager. Zastrow noted that after a
short learning curve for the builder, winter construction could
continue with a small crew through below zero temperatures.
- After analyzing the cost of heat per square foot, the school’s
principal estimates that the ICF walls will save the school more
than $500,000 in heating costs over the next 30 years! Click

testimonial letter from the principal (PDF will open in
new window).
- NOTE: Regardless of the brand of ICF you
build use, the energy-efficiency, comfort and safety of the
finished structures are virtually identical. This school wasn't
built using BuildBlock brand ICFs, but a structure built with
BuildBlock ICFs would perform in a like manner. We strongly
encourage the use of ICFs in general for the construction of
schools. We think BuildBlock is your best choice because the
features of our block will save installation time and money.
